RATIONALE:

The theme of the seminar, “Exploring Multimodality in English Language Studies and English as a Global Language” underscores the critical and conceptual frames of English, both as a tool for communication and a subject of research. While the uses of English in various domains of communication have different trajectories, the politics behind its use and the economic gains it offers to users demand re-thinking and re-theorizing. Through this seminar, English takes the center stage, but it extends its influence and power dynamics to the everyday context of interactions, to assessing/questioning English competencies, to English texts as shaped by culture, to interdisciplinary approaches in teaching and learning English, and to literature and other creative and or cultural expressions. Keeping in mind multimodality and its affordances in our visual and digital world, these landscapes also interrogate language as a social practice where meanings are polysemous and multifaceted.

Organized by ENG129 (Special Topics, Issues, and Perspectives in English Language Studies), the seminar aims to: 1) provide a platform for students, teachers, researchers, media practitioners, cultural workers, and educators to share their research findings and insights; 2) discuss the role of English and its varieties in the context of globalization; and 3) explore possibilities of collaborative projects. The seminar includes online parallel sessions.

Registration Fee for participants and presenters of 300 pesos within 探花论坛-IT and the Philippines and 7$ for overseas.
